Goals

Hi Everyone! It's great to be back after my long Christmas break! I can't wait to visit your blogs and catch up on everything I've been missing while I was away. Here's what's going on with me:

WHAT I'M READING:
Finding Your Voice by Les Edgerton
The Icebound Land (Book 3 in the Ranger's Apprentice series) by John Flanagan - I'm reading this one with my kids.

HOW MY WRITING'S GOING:
I'm still working on the rough draft of my latest wip, a YA mystery (working title is The Cottage, though that will change). It's slow going, but I'm making progress.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
Goals. I'm a big believer in goals, though I'm usually not very formal about them. With the new year, though, I've been thinking this would be a good time to take stock and see what I want to accomplish with my writing this year, so here goes:
This year, I'd like to
1 - Be more organized about the books I read. I want to keep better track of what I've read, and post (short) reviews on Goodreads and my blog.
2 - Finish the rough draft of The Cottage by March 1.
3 - Have at least one thorough revision of The Cottage done by August 1.

How about you? Do you set formal goals for yourself? What are your goals this year?

Happy New Year! Welcome back.

No goals for me, it's just an ongoing, writing-palooza with 3 different ms. and a couple of short stories.

Great goals! I'll be officially setting mine during my blogfest in a few weeks. Setting goals, especially seeing them written down, gives me motivation.

Glad you're back!

That's a good list! Yes, I do goals rather than resolutions. Right now my big ones are a successful launch for CassaFire and completion of the third book by summer.

welcome back, Suzie!
I never have goals, I'm afraid I will curse something if I make it a goal :)

Yes, I do keep goals large and small. I always keep Weekly To-Do lists keeping me on my writing track, and my big goal this year is to publish my novel in March. Happy New Year to you ...

Wonderful to have you back! I like your goals. Last year I committed to being more organized journaling what books I read and posting ratings on Goodreads. I'm really glad I did.
Happy writing and revising!

I'm a big believer in setting goals! (Obviously, I wrote a book on it.)

I like the name The Cottage.

Being more organized with what I have read and want to read is something I started last year. Saves me time.

"Hooked" by Les Edgerton is one of the best writing books I've ever read... I'll have to check out "Finding your voice"
Good to have you back - good luck with the New Year and your wonderful goals :)

Really like your organized approach to goals, very inspiring. Yes, I'm goal-oriented but need to fine-tune that a bit. Thanks for the nudge!

I'm going to keep better track of what I've read too. I'll use Goodreads to do that. :)

Excellent, reachable goals, Susan. Good luck!
I keep a word file titled 2012 books read (it also has books I want to read on it too). I add to it as I finish a book so I don't forget (though occasionally I do forget to add a title!). I also try to list the movies I saw that year for my yearly wrap up!

I set some goals for myself this year, for the first time and already they are making a difference. I love keeping track of the books I've read.

I'll try to keep track of all my writing goals. *sigh* Lists. I have lots of 'em. And now I gotta remember where they're at.

I love using goodreads for all my reading lists. Good luck on the YA draft and finishing it by March. I'm pulling for you. :-) Have you seen Mojo?? Maybe he;s under a rock.

Great list of goals! I do set goals. I have monthly ones and yearly ones. Mainly, it's doing more reading, writing, and editing.

Welcome back! Great list of goals. I love to make goals. I make yearly ones and then monthly ones and use to-do lists as daily ones. It keeps me motivated to get work done!

Welcome back! :)

I do set goals for myself; I have a lot of them this year (though several of them are small), but one is rewriting my first novel, hopefully by June.

Good luck with your goals!

Great goals, Susan.

Mine is to query my YA novel, to write the first draft of my new project (I'll start that next week), and edit it. I don't have specific dates.

Great goals, Susan! One of my goals is to get over my query fear...and get some of the things I've written out on submission.

I have plenty of goals, and most are them are to start something new and finish it before the year's end.
Best wishes to you in 2012!

I'm a goal setter as well, and I like the ones you shared. You're smart to pick goals a person can work toward rather than choosing pie-in-the-sky things that are really out of our control. I usually write down my writing goals for the following year and share them with my crit group, but I haven't done that yet. I plan to, though!

Over the years, I have moved away from New Year Resolutions. Since I love "To Do" lists..I make 2012 goals a task list. I did do theme for myself this year as I need to simplify. I figure any improvement in this area for me will be a success.

Welcome back!

I have some pretty lofty goals for myself this year and I don't know if I'm going to accomplish them, but I am going to try. I want to write 25,000 words a month, that's almost a thousand words a day, plus edit a novel in a few months, and read at least two books a month. It'll be difficult but I am looking forward to the challenge!

Paint more, find a new job when this one ends, try and be less angry (that's a longer process though)......

These are great goals. I especially like the idea of keeping track of what you've read and posting reviews.

Jackee said...

Welcome back, my dear! I try to post goals every year in the different avenues of my life (including writing). Usually they are in the categories of spiritual, physical, mental, intellectual, and etc. My writing goal this year is to write 500 words a day and stick to it. It's doable if I make it the first priority of the day. All other writing I get done is just gravy after that.

P.S. Want more Jedda? lol

Sounds like you have great goals! And so specific--which is good, because then you're more likely to get them accomplished. I have just general goals--read more, write more, exercise more, do artwork and play the piano more. And get a publisher, which isn't even in my control. LOL

Best wishes for yours, and Happy 2012!

Carolyn V said...

Awesome goals! I need more of them. Just to keep me on that writing path. ;)

Welcome back! I hope you had a restful break. :) As far as goals, I would definitely like to be more organized, too, but since I feel like I'm usually in survival mode at this stage of my life, I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing. :) So, short answer: no earth-moving goals for this year. I'm just going to keep plugging away.

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to blogging and happy new year!

Those are great goals. Good luck on them. I'd like to finish 2 WIPs this year.

Welcome back! I'm still formulating my 2012 goals...and the steps it'll take to achieve them. Good luck will all of yours! :)

Happy new year, Susan! You have some good goals. Best wishes to you in reaching them and even more. I hope to get at least one and possibly two books published this year (one already accepted and another close to it).

Great goals! I set formal goals for myself. Even if I don't achieve them, it at least gives me something to work toward. This year, my goal is to complete a project from start to finish. I've been outlining (something I don't normally do). I'm hoping to be ready to dive into the rough draft by the first of February. Best of luck with your goals!

Wonderful (and do-able) set of goals you have! I write down my goals where I can see the list daily...the thing though is to write them down "as if" they have already manifested in your life!
For instance:
"I am SO HAPPY that my agent has a publisher for my picture book" or
"I am thankful that I allow time each day to do the things that matter to me."
Good luck and may this New Year bring you many smiles!
