Twitter

Yikes! I've decided to take the plunge and get serious about Twitter. I have to admit, I'm so dang confused right now. My username is susanefields. You can get to my profile page here.

Anyway, I'm not sure how to find all you lovely people on Twitter. If you have a Twitter account, could you either tell me how I can find you to follow you, or follow me so I can follow you back? It's kind of lonely here in Twitterland by myself. :(

Anyone have any words of Twitter wisdom to share? Or a quick explanation of Tweetdeck? I've heard of it, but I don't know what it is. I'd sure appreciate any help I can get!

I still don't understand the philosophy. People keep explaining in and I don't get it. I am not smart enough for it, I guess. But good luck out there.

The single most important thing that I did to make twitter useful for me was to use it with a client - not on the twitter site. Clients, like tweet deck, allow you to organize your friends and interests and keep track of people in a much more organized way. You can also easily look up profiles and add people (how I added you - I can't remember when I started following your blog, but if you're in my RSS feed reader, I figure you're worth following on twitter as well :) )

Other advice: Tweet randomly. Talk about things that interest you. Interact with people. Don't focus on marketing... and don't auto DM people to thank you for following them. If you must auto reply, do so using an @name reply. Some people assume DMs are urgent and have them sent to their phones, so getting an auto-DM that just says "Thank you! Visit my blog!" feels really intrusive.

Yeah what Elizabeth said. I'm glad you're going to really get into it, Susan. I have found some interesting writerly folks that I would not have found without it.

Going to add you now. (((hugs)))

I added you, and I'm still learning things about Twitter. It seemed once I got a few followers more kept coming and I don't even know why.

Twitter is kind of fun but can be addicting. I try to limit myself to logging on for a short time in the morning. Not sure how people can "tweet" all day. Will see you there!

I was super nervous when I joined Twitter. I don't know why!
Here's my post with some good links and helpful tips in the comments. http://kpolark.blogspot.com/2010/11/im-twit.html

And I am following you on Twitter now!

I haven't started tweeting yet, so I'm just sitting out on a branch, observing all this for now :)

I love twitter :) Just be yourself. People will find you and follow. Engage in conversation and don't try to be like others :)

Gonna follow you. I use my name, so I'm easy to find. Tweetdeck can be a good and bad thing. You can post to Facebook and Twitter and I don't know where else, but the thing I find most annoying about it is the pop ups. If I follow those, I never get anything done. Also, it eats up a lot of memory once it's running. I want to find an online setup like Tweetdeck and I did, but now I have to go search again 'cause I forgot to follow through and sign up. Not to worry, you'll get the hang of it. If I can, anybody else can. :D

I've never tweeted so I can't help you. Sorry! But to be honest I'm glad I've never tweeted. I feel like it's one small way in which I can resist superflous technology.

Congratulations on taking the plunge, Susan! I have a twitter account, but I hardly ever tweet myself. I only direct my blog posts to it... :)

I don't have any words of wisdom because I am still lost on twitter. I know how to retweet something, and that's about it. I don't understand hashtags or anything! I'll have to read through all your comments to gain wisdom. But I'm glad we're twitter friends, Susan! Welcome to the insanity. ;)

I just followed you on Twitter. It's a good idea to sort through your follows and tag them in categories for your convenience.

You can find me @MissGoodonPaper

Never use the words blog, computer, read, write or iPod. You will get spammed.

Great to have you on board!

I followed you on Twitter, but I really don't even understand it myself. I hardly even know how to leave a tweet on someone's page, or leave one on my own. LOL.

Just followed you from @IndiaDrummond

Don't worry too much. Take a few days, explore, google terms you don't understand (like hashtag or tweep, perhaps?) and you can always ask! I've found the twitter community very helpful! I also use Tweetdeck (downloadable twitter client) that makes it soooo much easier once your list starts to grow.

Hope you had a good weekend.

Hi Susan,

I'm trying to find you on another tab to follow, I love twitter. As someone recently said, twitter is like water-cooler where everyone gathers to share book news and gossip.

Sorry forgot to add, I'm @NasDean on twitter!

I'll be following! I'm @StickyNoteStory on Twitter :)

It's confusing to start out, but once you have the hang of it Twitter will become your best friend and new obsession!
